Princess Park Thoroughbreds in Nagambie

Adam Palmer
Established in November 2005

“When deciding what region of Victoria we would set up our thoroughbred farm the choice was relatively straightforward. We needed a place that was close to Melbourne and a climate and landscape that was conducive to rearing and spelling horses.

Nagambie in central Victoria seemed the perfect choice. An added benefit is that we are surrounded by other thoroughbred farms offering services that we can utilise. Within a 40km radius we can access some of the best stallions Australia has to offer.

We also have specialised equine veterinarian practises, farriers and many other thoroughbred specific service businesses at our fingertips. The fact that there are so many renowned thoroughbred farms in the area is also a huge bonus when marketing the business. The area has a reputation as being the premier thoroughbred centre of Victoria.”

At the foot of the Strathbogie Ranges we are blessed with a good average annual rainfall which, combined with the strength of the soil, provides us with the pasture and carrying capacity we need for the busy breeding seasons.

There is no doubt that the earlier spring breaks on this side of the Divide give us the advantage of having mares cycling earlier in the season and the proximity to the major markets of both Melbourne and Sydney, via the marvellous Hume Freeway, is another definite positive.

These and other factors combined have seen a terrific growth in thoroughbred numbers in this area in recent times. This expansion has seen a further build up of first rate veterinary expertise and facilities, specialist farriers, feed and equipment merchants, transport companies, etc., etc. that sees the North East Thoroughbred Industry serviced so very professionally and well.
